The issue of reason and religion has been one of the fundamental topics in philosophy and theology. One of the approaches proposed to resolve this conflict is Rudolf Bultmann's theory of demythologization. According to him, many of the narratives presented in the Bible are based on a mythical worldview that is no longer acceptable, and by removing the veil of myths, one can access the existential core and essence of its message.
This article employs a descriptive-analytical and library-based methodology to examine and explicate Bultmann's theory of demythologization and evaluates its effectiveness in achieving its intended purpose.
An analysis of Bultmann’s arguments reveals that his concept of demythologization cannot serve as a viable solution to the conflict between religion and reason and may even result in the sacrifice of the sacred dimensions of religion.
Keywords: Bible, reason and religion, Rudolf Bultmann, myth, demythologization, existentialism, Heidegger.
