Abstract:   (15 Views)
The demonstrability of God's existence in the Quran is a contentious issue among scholars of religious studies. In response to the question of whether the Holy Quran contains philosophical arguments and proofs for the existence of God, three primary viewpoints have emerged: the absence of such argumentation, the presence of explicit and manifest argumentation, and the presence of implicit and allusive argumentation. Prior to engaging with these claims and theories, it is imperative to analyze the interpretations of early commentators (i.e., from the period preceding the introduction and proliferation of philosophy in the Islamic world) regarding the verses pertinent to this discussion, as this inquiry logically and historically precedes the aforementioned debates. Accordingly, this paper, employing an analytical-descriptive methodology, seeks to investigate the exegetical works extant from the first three centuries AH. Irrespective of examining, affirming, or refuting the aforementioned theories, it pursues the specific question of how commentators in the pre-philosophical period understood the relevant Quranic verses. This research, through the examination of over 70 verses related to the topic across 43 exegetical works, concludes that the commentators of the first three centuries AH did not, in a single instance, derive a philosophical argument or proof for the existence of God from the verses under consideration.
